As a substitute for rice wine... I'd recommend using dry sherry or dry vermouth. Sherry and vermouth should be readily available in the wine section of your market. If your market doesn't have dry sherry or vermouth. I'd use a white wine with blanc in the name (like a sauvingnon blanc or chenin blanc). Pinot grigio will also work.
If you or your family are not wine drinkers, I'd recommend buying sherry or vermouth. These two wines are fortified and should keep a lot longer than wine.
If you're only using 1 or 2 tablespoons and don't want to buy a whole bottle of something... you can get buy with a little lemon and apple juice mixed together... Pale Dry Sherry 鈥?available at liquor stores, this is the most commonly recommended substitute for rice wine. It comes closest in flavor to Shaoxing rice wine (also spelled Shao-hsing or Shaohsing), an amber colored wine made with glutinous rice, wheat yeast and spring water. Since rice wine can be hard to find, many recipes will only have dry sherry in the ingredients list, not even giving rice wine as an option.
Gin 鈥?While Shaoxing rice wine is commonly recommended because of its consistent high quality, there are many types of rice wines in China. Gin comes closer in flavor to the white rice wines than dry sherry. Feel free to give it a try if you like.

Dry White Wine 鈥?While the flavor is not the same, it makes an acceptable substitute for Chinese rice wine in marinades.

Rice wine is white and burgundy is red. Much different tastes. PLEASE never cook with a wine you would not drink. Cooking wine is technically wine but is actually closer to a vinegar. It sucks as a wine. Only cook with a wine you would drink.
Sake is a rice wine that comes in different tastes. Go to sushi bar and try a few to see what you like. White wine from grapes is some what comparable.

No, rice wine is sake and just about as opposite of Burgundy as could be. You could use some extra dry sherry or some mirin. Apple juice doesn't sound horrible. If that's all you have why not give it a whirl.
Sake is almost everywhere so if you have a few minutes to get to the store it would be worth it.
Whatever you do, do NOT use so-called ';cooking wine'; from a grocery store. The stuff is laced with salt and will kill any recipe.

NO!! Can't use that!! If U can't find rice wine, maybe U can find rice vinegar, but U will have to compensate for the tang.
